There are three types of test transformer: dry-type test transformer, SF6 gas-filled test transformer, oil immersed test transformer.

AC resonant test system theory

A series resonance test system is a highly specialized system used to test the resonant frequency of electrical equipment. This system is widely used in the electrical industry to detect faults in electrical equipment and ensure power systems' safety and reliability.
The system operates on the principle of series resonance, which is achieved when the inductance and capacitance in a circuit are balanced to resonate at a specific frequency. In this state, the impedance of the circuit is at a minimum, and the voltage and current in the circuit are at their maximum values.

The resonance test set is mainly used for AC voltage withstand tests of crosslinked cable, hydraulic generators, main transformers, bus bars, switchgear, GIS, and other projects, with a wide range of applications.

High Voltage Reactor

A high-voltage reactor comprises the heart of the system. The reactor is oil-insulated and consists of two identically wound high-voltage coils mounted on a special core provided with fixed air gaps. The air gaps lie within the coils to reduce flux fringing. The core is mounted permanently to a frame that is mounted in a cylinder. The upper part of the high-voltage reactor includes space for oil expansion with an oil level indicator. The output of the reactor is via a high-voltage electrode.

A capacitive high voltage divider is provided for accurate measurement of the output voltage.
 
The connection from the divider to the system is a coax cable.
 

Excitation Transformer

 

The exciter section contains a two-winding, single-phase, step-up transformer that supplies the AC voltage required for the resonant circuit. It is mounted in a separate oil-filled steel tank provided with input and output bushings. The output voltage and power of the exciting transformer are normally equal to the rated output data of the test set divided by the Q factor

Variable Frequency Power Supply
 
The variable frequency power supply provides an adjustable input voltage and adjustable frequency to the exciter and controls the output voltage of the high voltage reactor from near zero to full voltage.
The variable frequency power supply is controlled by a microprocessor which operates the inverter section. In addition to the solid-state voltage control circuitry, the regulator is also
equipped with a main circuit breaker, main contactor, and electronic overload sensing. The entire assembly is housed in the control room enclosure.

Based on the components of serial resonant, there are three parametric variables, inductance L, capacitance C, and frequency f. The capacitance C is the test object. Assume that the inductance is certain, the resonance can be reached by changing the corresponding resonant frequency f based on C. Given that the generator testing frequency is power frequency, as for testing capacitance, we not only regulate the frequency but also reasonably alter the inductance to change the frequency, aiming to meet the requirement of power frequency. In brief, a variable frequency and variable inductance resonant test system is a serial resonant device with variable frequency and inductance. Frequency regulation aims to ensure LC is resonant while the purpose of inductance regulation is to make resonant frequency provide the needed frequency based on the resonance.

 

Application of Variable Inductance Resonant Test System 


When conducting the AC withstand voltage test of the generator, test voltage and time should meet the requirement. In addition, it requires power frequency. Therefore, when using the serial resonant device, it not only requires to use variable frequency power supply which can change output frequency, but also use variable reactor which can change the inductance in order to make the resonant frequency meet the power frequency demand.
