FAQ
Q: The contact resistance of a circuit breaker is often as low as 30 μΩ. Why should I worry if it rises to 100 μΩ? It's still a tiny number.
A: It is a matter of Thermal Runaway driven by the P = I²R law.
The Math: In a 2000A system, a 50 μΩ resistance generates 200 Watts of heat at a single contact point. If it rises to 150 μΩ, it generates 600 Watts.
The Consequence: Because GIS and breakers are sealed, this heat cannot escape. It causes the metal to expand, oxidizes the silver plating, and decomposes the SF6 gas into acids.
The Verdict: A small rise in μΩ is the "first symptom" of a catastrophic equipment failure.
Q: My digital multimeter has a "low resistance" mode. Can I use it to check the busbar joints?
A: No. A multimeter uses a tiny sensing current (milliamps), which is useless for power equipment.
The Oxide Film: Contact surfaces naturally develop a microscopic layer of oxidation. A multimeter's low voltage cannot "break through" this film, leading to a false-high or fluctuating reading.
The Breakthrough: A high-current source (100A+) creates enough potential difference to effectively "pierce" the surface contamination, establishing a true metal-to-metal measurement that reflects the equipment's actual performance under load.
Standard Rule: IEC 62271-1 specifies a minimum of 50A DC for these tests, with 100A+ being the industry preferred standard for accuracy.
Q: My tester shows 45 μΩ. Is that good or bad?
A: There is no single "magic number." You must use the "Three-Comparison" strategy:
Factory Baseline (Birth Record): Compare the reading to the original factory test report. It should not exceed 1.2 to 1.5 times the factory value.
Phase-to-Phase: Compare A, B, and C phases. They should be within 10-20% of each other. If one phase is 80 μΩ and the others are 40 μΩ, the 80 μΩ phase is failing.
Manufacturer Limits: Check the manual. For example, a 1250A breaker might have a limit of 60 μΩ, while a 3150A breaker might be limited to 35 μΩ.
