Q: Water is not conductive at low quantities. Why is it so dangerous inside an SF6-filled compartment?

A: It is all about the chemistry under an electric arc. While pure SF6 is inert, moisture acts as a catalyst for destruction.

The Reaction: When an arc occurs (during switching or partial discharge), SF6 breaks down. If H2O is present, it reacts with these by-products to form Hydrofluoric Acid (HF) and Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4).

The Damage: These acids aggressively etch the surface of epoxy resin insulators (basin insulators), creating a rough, carbonized path.

The Catastrophe: Eventually, this leads to a surface flashover and catastrophic failure of the GIS, even if the gas pressure remains within normal limits.

Q: My analyzer shows both Dew Point and PPMv. I'm confused about which one to record in the test report.

A: For modern engineering, PPMv (parts per million by volume) is the safer choice for reporting.

The Reason: Dew point is pressure-dependent. A reading of -40°C at atmospheric pressure is NOT the same as -40°C at rated operating pressure (e.g., 0.5 MPa).

The Standards: International standards like IEC 60480 recommend using PPMv or normalizing the Dew Point to 20°C at atmospheric pressure to ensure data consistency.

Rule of Thumb: If you report in Dew Point, you MUST include the pressure reading at the time of measurement. Without pressure data, a dew point reading is meaningless.

Q: My analyzer shows 250 PPMv for a 220kV circuit breaker. Should I be worried?

A: Yes, that is an immediate "Action Required" signal.

New Gas: Should be extremely dry, typically < 8 ppmv.

In-Service Limit (IEC 60480): For equipment rated > 72.5kV, moisture should generally be < 150 ppmv.

The Danger Zone: Anything above 200 ppmv (or a dew point higher than -36°C normalized) indicates significant contamination. You must perform gas recycling (drying) or replacement to prevent long-term acid damage to the insulators.
