TDR Cable Fault Locator

HYDGC-H Cable Fault Tester is a set of comprehensive cable fault detection equipment. It can test the high-resistance flashover fault of the cable, high-low resistance grounding, short circuit, cable disconnection, poor contact and other faults. If it is equipped with an acoustic measuring factory point instrument, it can accurately determine the precise location of the fault point. It is suitable for testing cables and communication cables of various types and voltage levels. The whole set of power cable fault tester consists of three parts: flash testing, tracing and positioning.

The cable fault tester (flash tester) can be used to detect low resistance, high resistance, short circuit, open circuit, leakage fault and flashover fault of various cables, and can accurately detect the fault point location, cable length and cable buried path. It has the characteristics of accurate testing, high degree of intelligence, wide adaptability, stable performance, and light and portable. The instrument adopts the Chinese character system, high-definition display, and friendly interface.

The cable tracking and fault point are composed of path meter, fixed point meter, T-type probe, A frame, handset, etc. This instrument is a special instrument for cable fault location test, suitable for the test object is a metal conductor (wire pair, protective layer, shielding layer) of all kinds of cables. Its main functions are to locate and test the poor ground insulation points, detect the cable path, and test the buried depth of the cable.

Safe, quick, and accurate to test. The instrument applies the methods of Low Voltage Pulse and High Resistance Flashover. It can test all kinds of faults, especially on the Flashover and High Resistance fault testing without burning through. If it is equipped with sounding method and locating instrument, it can exactly point out the location of the fault.

Our instrument uses the tech of high-speed data sampling, the speed of A/D is 100MHz, and makes a resolution ratio of 1m and testing dead zone of 1m.

The testing results are automatically shown by waveform and data on the large LED. It is easy to view. It does not need special training for operators.

It uses non-volatile devices and after turning off, it still saves the waveform and data.

5. Function of Double-trace Showing

It can compare the waveforms of fault-manner cables and those of the regular ones. It is beneficial for the further testing of the fault.

6. Function of Magnifying on the Scale of Wave Form

Through magnifying the scale of the waveform, it can make further exact testing.

7. Display distance

It can wantonly change the position of the cursor, showing the direct or indirect distance of the fault point and testing point.

8. Modify function

It has the function of changing the speed of communication depending on the tested cable.

9. AC DC dual use

The instrument is portable and with a chargeable battery to provide power. It is convenient to take and use.

Q1: How does a simple 100V pulse know where the fault is?

A: TDR works like maritime sonar. It sends a narrow pulse, listens for the echo from impedance changes, and measures the time delay (Δt). Distance L = (v * Δt) / 2.

The Process:

❶ Send Pulse: 100V signal travels down the line.

❷ Hit Boundary: Reflection occurs at breaks, shorts, or joints.

❸ Measure Echo: Time difference is converted to distance based on wave speed.

Q2: In a 3km cable with 5 joints, how do I know which one is the fault?

A: Look at the Magnitude and perform a "Phase Comparison."

Expert Tactics:

• Joint Signal: Very small, quick dip or bump (symmetrical).

• Fault Signal: Sharp, permanent downward jump (high magnitude).

• A-B-C Compare: Overlay the waveforms. If it exists on all phases, it's a joint. If only on one, it's a fault.

Q: The breaker tripped, but the TDR wave is a flat line. Is the machine broken?

A: No. TDR is blind to high-resistance leaks (e.g. 5,000 Ω). A 100V pulse is too weak to notice such a subtle change.

The Logic:

• A 5kΩ leak in a 50Ω cable is only a 1% impedance change.

• Pulse passes over it as if it isn't there.
