FAQ
Q1: How many breakdowns should be run, and how is the result reported?
Answer:
IEC 60156 requires six breakdowns with a defined rest interval, discarding the first where the procedure allows it, and reporting the mean together with the coefficient of variation. ASTM D1816 uses a similar series with its own rest period. The series exists because breakdown in a liquid is a statistical event: a single value tells you almost nothing, while the mean and the spread together tell you whether the sample is homogeneous.
Report the method, gap, electrode type, Ramp Rate, number of breakdowns, mean and standard deviation. A spread above roughly ten percent of the mean points to free water, particles or air bubbles rather than to a genuine oil property, and the series should be repeated on a fresh portion before any conclusion is drawn. Instruments that log each individual breakdown, not just the average, make this judgement possible after the fact.
Q2: Can one tester run both IEC and ASTM methods, or do we need two instruments?
Answer:
One instrument can run both, provided it is supplied with the correct electrode sets and the firmware carries both procedures. The cell is the part that differs: spherical electrodes with a 2.5 mm gap for IEC 60156, VDE profile electrodes with 1 mm and 2 mm gaps for ASTM D1816, plus a Stirrer for the ASTM method and a gauge for gap verification. The high-voltage source, the measuring divider and the trip circuit are common to both.
Specify interchangeable cells with tool-free fitting and a preset stored for each combination, so the operator selects a method rather than assembling a test. Verify that changing the cell does not require recalibration of the divider, and that the stored procedure locks the Ramp Rate to the standard. This is the configuration that lets a service company serve both European and North American clients from a single instrument.
Q3: How is a BDV tester calibrated and verified between formal calibrations?
Answer:
Formal calibration covers the voltage measuring chain and is usually annual, against a reference divider traceable to a national standard. Between calibrations the operator needs a simpler check that the whole system - electrodes, gap and electronics - is behaving: a check gap or a reference oil of known breakdown value. A check gap is the more practical field option, since it is insensitive to storage conditions and gives a direct voltage reading.
Run the check after any electrode change, after the cell has been dismantled for cleaning, and at the start of a test campaign. Record the value in the instrument log together with the date, the operator and the gap setting. A drift of more than a few percent against the previous check points to electrode wear, a contaminated cell or a divider fault, and the unit should be withdrawn until the cause is identified. Treat the calibration certificate as the annual baseline and the check gap as the daily assurance.
Q4: Should we buy a portable field unit or a laboratory instrument?
Answer:
The choice follows where the decisions are made. A portable unit - typically 60kV or 80kV, battery or mains powered, with an integrated cell, printer and rugged case - lets a crew test at the transformer, decide immediately whether oil treatment is needed, and avoid the delay and contamination risk of transporting samples. It is the right instrument for commissioning, substation maintenance and mobile service work.
A laboratory instrument - usually 80kV or 100kV, with a larger cell, forced stirring, temperature control and direct LIMS export - is the right choice for a central oil laboratory handling high volumes and for acceptance testing of new oil, where the full range and the tighter repeatability matter. Many organisations run both: portable sets for screening in the field, laboratory sets for confirmation and for dispute resolution. Whichever is chosen, insist on result logging with method, gap and Ramp Rate attached, because a BDV number without its test conditions cannot be defended.
