How to do HVAC Test on CABLE and Terminations

Jan 15, 2025 Leave a message

Why it is important to do the HVAC test on cable?
It is to ensure that the cable and terminations are fit for service and safe to energize.
The method used will be to apply a sinusoidal voltage between each cable conductor and insulation shield (ground) in turn for a period of time.
The cable has to withstand 132KV for 1 hour.
The AC voltage will be generated by LC series resonance whereby the cable under test will be the capacitor and a high-voltage reactor will be the inductor.
An exciter transformer connected between the low voltage terminal of the reactor and the ground will be used to energize the resonant LC pair. The exciter transformer is energized from a variable frequency inverter via an isolation transformer. The Inverter output frequency can be varied electronically between 20HZ and 300HZ.

Which are the equipment / Accessories to be used for the Test?

How to choose the model Resonant Frequency High Volt AC test kit for cable?
The Resonant Frequency High Volt AC test kit is essential for testing high-voltage cables before use. It ensures that the cables are safe and meet the requirements. However, choosing the right model of the Resonant Frequency High Volt AC test kit can be challenging.

1. Voltage rating: The test kit should match the voltage rating of the cable that needs testing. If the test kit fails to match the voltage rating, it may result in dangerous and expensive consequences.

2. Frequency range: The frequency range is also an important consideration. The frequency range should be adjusted to match the cable's specifications. The mismatch might result in inaccurate readings, leading to damage to the cable and safety risks.

3. Output power: The output power is important to consider, as it determines the amount of power that the test kit can deliver to the cable. The more power the test kit delivers, the more effective it will be in identifying faults and defects in the cable.

4. Safety features: The safety features of the test kit are also critical for consideration. It should have features like current measurement, overvoltage protection, and grounding to ensure that it provides accurate and safe readings.

5. Ease of use: A user-friendly test kit that is easy to use would be more efficient and effective. It would also be beneficial if the kit had a user manual or tutorial video to help with the setup process.

6. Price: Price should also be a factor when purchasing the test kit. However, it should not be the determining factor, as cheaper options may not necessarily have all the necessary features, jeopardizing safety.
