Once the approximate fault location is determined via the TDR, a more precise fault location is required, especially in complex setups like buried or underground cables. A Cable Fault Locator applies specialized voltage pulses, such as the surge or thumping method. The resulting electrical fault generates an audible sound or mechanical impact not easily missed by passing pedestrians or detected by instruments on the surface.
Utilizing Pinpointing/Listening Devices
To finely pinpoint the exact fault location, technicians use listening devices or pinpointer tools that detect fault-generated sounds or electromagnetic signals. These devices can amplify faint signals from underground faults and help surveyors mark the exact position for excavation or repair.
