Current transformer(CT) test

These are some of the basic tests performed on a current transformer. It's important to note that specific procedures and standards may vary depending on the application and local regulations. Qualified personnel with expertise in electrical testing and safety should carry out these tests.

1. visual inspection: Start by visually inspecting the current transformer for any signs of damage or wear. Check for loose connections, cracks, or other visible issues that may affect its performance.

2. CT ratio test: The CT ratio test is conducted to verify if the turns ratio of the CT matches the specified ratio. A known AC current is passed through the primary winding, and the secondary winding is connected to a current meter. The ratio of the primary current to the secondary current is compared to the rated ratio of the CT.

3. Polarity test: The polarity of a CT refers to the direction of the current in the secondary winding relative to the primary winding. The polarity test ensures that the current flows in the correct direction. A low-voltage DC power source is connected to the primary winding, and the direction of the resulting DC voltage across the secondary winding is checked.

4. Burden test: The burden test is performed to ensure that the CT can accurately measure the current under its specified load conditions. A calibrated current source is connected to the primary winding, and the secondary winding is connected to a burden resistor or an instrument. The current indicated by the instrument is compared to the known value of the source current.

5. insulation resistance test: This test checks the insulation integrity of the CT. A high-voltage DC source is applied between the primary winding and the CT core, while the secondary winding is left open. The insulation resistance is measured to ensure that it meets the required standards.

6. saturation test: The saturation test determines the point at which the CT saturates and can no longer provide accurate measurements. Increasing AC current is passed through the primary winding while monitoring the secondary current. The point at which the secondary current no longer increases linearly with the primary current is noted.
