Q1: We are moving toward fiber-optic substations. Can I still use my traditional tester?

A: Only if it has Optical Digital Communication capabilities.
• Traditional: Uses copper wires to send analog 100V/5A signals.
IEC 61850 (Digital): Replaces copper with fiber optics. The tester must output Sampled Values (SV) and receive GOOSE messages.
• Future-Proofing: Our high-end series acts as both an analog and digital tester. It can send virtual messages to a digital relay while simultaneously outputting analog signals, allowing you to bridge the gap during the industry's transition to smart grids.

 

Q2: I see testers with 3 current channels and others with 6. When is the 6-phase version mandatory?

A: It depends on the complexity of the protection logic you are testing.
• 3-Phase Testers: Ideal for standard overcurrent, distance, and directional relays. It covers about 80% of routine maintenance tasks.
• 6-Phase Testers: Essential for Transformer Differential Protection. To test differential relays effectively, you need to simulate currents on both the high-voltage and low-voltage sides simultaneously (3 phases each).
• The Recommendation: If your work involves power transformers, busbar protection, or complex automatic bus-transfer (ATS) schemes, a 6-phase tester is the industry gold standard.

 

Q3: Some testers are very light, but the more expensive ones are heavier. Is there a technical reason for this?

A: Yes, it is the difference between Linear and switching amplifiers.
• Switching Amplifiers: Light and portable, but they generate high-frequency switching noise, which can interfere with sensitive microcomputer relays.
Linear Amplifiers (The Pro Choice): Though heavier, they provide "High Fidelity" output. They produce pure sinusoidal waves with nearly zero harmonic distortion.
