Transformer Tan Delta Test: A Crucial Tool for Transformer Diagnosis

Jun 13, 2024 Leave a message

Tan delta test is an important diagnostic tool for transformers, as it can detect potential insulation problems before they become critical and prevent transformer failures. This test measures the insulation quality of a transformer by assessing the power loss due to the leakage current caused by the insulation resistance between various parts of the transformer. If this insulation resistance is low, the transformer may be at a high risk of failure.

A transformer's insulation can deteriorate over time due to environmental factors like temperature, moisture, and contaminants, and tan delta testing ensures the insulation is still within acceptable conditions. The test determines the power factors of all the three phases of the transformer insulation system, including winding, bushings, and insulating oil.

The test is initiated by applying a high voltage to the transformer winding while keeping the other terminals grounded. As a result, a current starts flowing through the insulation. This current is mainly influenced by the capacitance of the insulation, and the loss angle between the current and voltage phase relationship is known as the tan delta. The test determines this angle and compares it to the factory specifications or results from prior tests. If the change is significant, it could indicate a problem with the insulation.

Although the tan delta test is generally applied in the new transformer commissioning process, its use is also important in older transformers during routine maintenance. This will ensure the transformer continues to function properly, maintains its performance, and maximizes its life expectancy.

The tan delta test is an accurate, reliable, and cost-effective way to assess the insulation quality of transformers. Its application during regular testing provides a means to identify issues and plan for maintenance in advance, thus saving on potential unplanned downtime and repair costs. Therefore, it is vital for transformer owners and operators to use this test to maintain the integrity of their transformer and overall power system.

In order to realize the test and get good results, our company developed the tan delta tester. It can output 12KV voltage and do CVT test, with a touch screen, easy to operate. It is a good test equipment for transformer tan delta analysis.
