The Crucial Role of Transformer Oil Testing in Power Maintenance

Jun 13, 2024 Leave a message

Transformers play a critical role in the transmission and distribution of electrical power. They are responsible for stepping up or stepping down voltage as required to ensure that power can be transmitted efficiently across long distances and to consumers. To ensure the reliability and safety of transformers, routine testing of transformer oil is essential.

Transformer oil, also known as insulating oil or dielectric oil, serves as both a coolant and an insulator. It is essential to the proper functioning of the transformer. Routine testing of transformer oil can help identify potential issues before they become major problems that can lead to transformer failure.

There are several key tests that are performed on transformer oil, including:

1. Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) – DGA is a critical test that identifies the presence of gases that are generated as a result of transformer operations. These gases can indicate the presence of faults or other issues within the transformer.

2. Moisture Content – Moisture can reduce the overall dielectric strength of the transformer oil, leading to an increased risk of arcing and potential failures. Testing for moisture content is critical to ensuring the transformer operates safely and reliably.

3. Acid Number – The acid number of the transformer oil can indicate the presence of corrosive compounds that can cause damage to the transformer, reducing its overall lifespan.

4. Interfacial Tension – A reduction in interfacial tension can be an indication of the presence of contaminants in the transformer oil, which can lead to operational problems.

5. Dielectric Breakdown Voltage – This test measures the ability of the transformer oil to withstand electrical stress without breaking down. A reduction in dielectric breakdown voltage can be an indication of the presence of contaminants or other issues.

6. Oil Tan delta resistivity test-measuring dielectric loss factor and DC resistivity of liquid insulating medium such as insulating oil.

It is important to note that testing should be performed at regular intervals, depending on the age and condition of the transformer and the type of oil used. It is also important to ensure that testing is performed by experienced technicians using proper equipment and techniques. Wuhan Huayi electric power company research and develop the series of oil test equipment to meet the requirements, according to IEC standard. They can test and analyze the parameters of transformer oil and maintain the performance of transformers.
