Q: Is 300Hz still a fair test for a 50Hz cable? Why allow a range instead of an exact 50Hz?
A: The range is an engineering compromise for Equivalence and Portability. Research shows XLPE treeing behavior is nearly identical to 50Hz within this band.
Q: Why buy a 160kV Resonant System when a tiny VLF can do the job?
A: VLF is great for 35kV cables, but hits a wall at 110kV+. Resonant sets are more efficient at high voltages.

Q: Does the frequency of the Hipot source matter for Partial Discharge (PD) monitoring?
A: Yes. PD activity depends on the Voltage Gradient (dv/dt). Higher frequencies trigger more sparks.
Frequency vs. PD Accuracy:
• At 200Hz: High dv/dt triggers voids many times/sec. Waveforms match 50Hz service accurately.
• At 0.1Hz: Slow voltage change might not trigger some defects at all (False Negative).
Q: Can I go to 400Hz for a short cable? What are the risks?
A: No. High frequency is the enemy of heavy electrical components due to thermal and loss factors.
Risks of >300Hz:
❶ Eddy Current Losses: Energy waste in tanks/screens increases with frequency squared.
❷ Skin Effect: Current only flows on the "skin," raising AC resistance and dropping Q-factor.
❸ Dielectric Heating: Internal heating can cause thermal breakdown before the test ends.
Q: When I press Auto-Tune, what is the VFD doing during that 10-second sweep?
A: The VFD is performing a Frequency Sweep to find the exact peak voltage "hump."
The Scan Cycle:
1. Scan: VFD ramps from 20Hz to 300Hz at low voltage.
2. Peak Detect: Monitoring exciter current vs output voltage.
3. Lock: The computer "locks" the frequency where the output voltage peaks.
