The Site Acceptance Test (SAT) for MV switchgear

The purpose of the SAT is to verify that the switchgear has been installed correctly, is performing as expected, and meets the design and performance requirements specified in the contract. It also ensures that all necessary documentation and training have been provided to the customer.

The SAT typically consists of a series of tests that are performed on the switchgear, including functional tests, electrical tests, and mechanical tests. These tests may be conducted on individual components of the switchgear or on the switchgear as a whole.

 

1. Preparation: Before conducting the SAT, it is essential to review the project specifications, drawings, and relevant documentation to ensure that all requirements are understood. The test plan should be finalized, and all necessary testing equipment and tools should be prepared.

2. Visual Inspection: The SAT usually starts with a visual inspection of the MV switchgear to check for any physical damage, proper labeling, and compliance with safety standards. This includes verifying that all components are properly installed and connected.

3. Functional Testing: This involves testing the functionality of various components of the MV switchgear, such as circuit breakers, relays, meters, control panels, and interlocking systems.

4. Protection Testing: Protection testing is critical to ensure that the MV switchgear can detect and respond to faults or abnormal conditions correctly.

5. Operational Tests: The SAT verifies the operational performance of the MV switchgear under normal operating conditions. This includes testing functions like opening and closing of circuit breakers, switching operations, metering accuracy, and control logic.

6. Electrical Tests: Electrical tests are performed to verify the insulation resistance, contact resistance, hi-pot test, and continuity of the MV switchgear. This ensures the integrity of electrical connections and insulation within the equipment.

7. Communication and Control System Testing: If the MV switchgear is equipped with communication and control systems, testing of these functions is essential. This includes verifying communication protocols, remote operation capabilities, and integration with other systems.

8. Load Testing: If applicable, load testing may be conducted to verify the capacity of the MV switchgear to handle the specified load conditions.

9. Emergency Shutdown Testing: Testing the emergency shutdown procedures and mechanisms is crucial to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment in case of emergencies or abnormal conditions.

10. Documentation and Reporting: Detailed documentation of the test procedures, test results, deviations, and any corrective actions taken should be maintained for future reference.

11. Client Acceptance: Once the SAT is completed successfully, the client or their representative should review the test results and provide formal acceptance of the MV switchgear.
