How to Read and Understand a Current Transformer (CT) Nameplate? 

A Current Transformer (CT) steps down high current (kA level) into a small, measurable value (1 A or 5 A). This allows a safe connection to meters, relays, and protection devices.  Current transformers (CTs) are essential components in electrical systems for measuring and monitoring current flow. Understanding how to read and interpret the information on a CT nameplate is crucial for ensuring the proper installation and operation of the device. Reading a CT nameplate correctly ensures accurate metering, reliable protection, and safe operation of electrical networks.


Typical CT Nameplate Data Explained

CT Ratio (Primary / Secondary Current)
Example: 1000/5 A
Meaning: When 1000 A flows in the primary, 5 A will be available on the secondary.
 Burden (VA)
Example: 15 VA
Maximum load CT can supply (meters + relay + cable resistance).
Exceeding this → accuracy drops.
Accuracy Class
0.2 / 0.5 / 1 → Metering CT (high accuracy, billing, measurement).
5P / 10P / PS → Protection CT (works correctly during fault currents).

 Knee Point Voltage (Vk) (Protection CTs only)
Voltage at which CT saturates. Important for differential protection.
ALF (Accuracy Limit Factor) (Protection CTs)
Example: ALF 10 → CT remains accurate up to 10 × rated current.
 ILF (Instrument Limit Factor) (Metering CTs)
Example: ILF 5 → Protects meters if the current rises above 5 × rated value.
 Rated Continuous Current (In)
CT can carry this current continuously without overheating.
Example: 120% of rated current.
Short-Time Thermal Current (Ith)
Fault withstand current for 1s or 3s.
Example: Ith = 25 kA / 1s.
Dynamic Current (Idyn)
Mechanical withstand during short circuit (usually 2.5 × Ith).
